Lesson Plan #1

Learning Goals:

1) Students will recognize the new words and understand their meanings.
2) Students will be able to use each of the new words in a sentence.
3) Students will be able to incorporate the new words into their reading and comprehension of "Death of a Salesman."

Materials:

Handout of the list of vocabulary words, computers/dictionaries for the students to look up definitions, four chairs, and a list of definitions and sentences using the words.

Introduction/Motivation for Learning:

1) Take attendance
2) Read the students a sentence that uses large, hard-to-understand words and ask them to tell me what it means.
3) After they guess, read another sentence that also uses large and hard-to-understand words and have them tell me its meaning.
4) Use the sentences to make the point that knowing the meaning of the words used in a text is important to their ability to comprehend the text's meaning.

Procedures/Activities

1) Give each student a handout containing the vocabulary words
2) Divide the students into four teams
3) Assign each team four or five of the vocabulary words
4) Ask the students to look up the definitions to their assigned words
5) Have the students share the definitions they find with the other students
6) Play the "Lexicon Challenge" game
--> one student from each team will come to the front of the room and sit on a chair. I will then read either a definition or a sentence containing one of the vocabulary words (omitting the word when I read it). The first student to stand up and give the correct word receives a point. The team with the most points at the end wins (I will have candy as a prize).

ICC Standard:
Uses a variety of strategies to understand unfamiliar vocabulary

Closure

As the students to individually look up any definitions they do not yet have and study them for a quiz they will have on Wednesday.
